Buyer Beware: Willie Mays Forgeries

2001 Fleer Tradition Willie Mays Stitches In Time Autograph #4

According to Beckett Media, Willie Mays and Artie Wilson packed out as exchange cards with a redemption deadline of 02/01/02. Willie Mays never signed his cards and all 103 cards ended up in the collection of long time former Topps Executive Sy Berger. The unsigned cards were auctioned off in the Robert Edwards Auctions (REA) as part of an unreleased Willie Mays lot. Quote from the auction, “3) 2001 Fleer Tradition Stitches in Time Autographs Card (no card number). 103 cards total, NONE of which are signed by Mays, each in Mint condition.

The unsigned legitimate card has been listed at $33.99 each while the forged copy by another seller has been dropping in price (from $250 down to $124.24). Also, notice this on the Willie Mays autographed version auctions: “This is a private listing and your identity will not be disclosed to anyone except the seller.” I guess he doesn’t want the buyer to be warned.
